Influenced by David Bowie, Brian Eno, Scott Walker, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop. David Bowery was born David Kowalczyk in a Polish-speaking household in North Manchester. At 22, he spent his life savings on a vintage saxophone and a cobalt blue suit, an act of artistic defiance that led to a five-year silence from his factory-worker father. He adopted the name 'Bowery' and began writing theatrical, sax-heavy art-rock in his small flat in a converted mill, where he lives with a broken mannequin named 'Isherwood'. His songs are dispatches from the beautiful ruins of post-industrial cities and fractured families.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The cardboard from a box of Persil is your first placard sign.
It's Tuesday, quarter-past six, the chill off the tramlines
Bites at your shins through thin-worn denim, a familiar ache.
You're watching the light fail on the cornice for goodness sake.
This is the before.

[Chorus]
Is this the only blueprint we'll ever get to share?
A city drawn in biro on the back of a prayer?

[Verse 2]
A student offers you a flask, the coffee smells of rust.
Her earnest face a palimpsest of someone you once trusted.
You see my dziadek's certainty in the set of her jaw,
A defiance he kept folded in a Warsaw kitchen drawer.
This is the hope.

[Spoken-Word Interlude]
(A clipped, disembodied female voice, as if from a distant tannoy or police radio)
"Please be advised that Section 14 of the Public Order Act is now in effect."

[Chorus]
Is this the only blueprint we'll ever get to share?
A city drawn in biro on the back of a prayer?

[Bridge]
A human scaffolding 'round a promise made of glass.
It feels just like the silence that followed the cobalt suit. A thing that couldn't last.

[Outro]
And the first shout rises.
And the question hangs in the air.
