Lyrics
The clerk’s pen has a Union Jack clicker.
The air in here smells of lemon polish and damp wool.
I'm holding a posture I learned from a film,
the one my father turned off, back in Cheetham Hill.
[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
This whole room is just temporary scaffolding round a hollow promise.
He said, "They only want your hands, not your head, son, be honest."
I think about the frost on the Smedley Lane allotments,
how the cold of the marble floor feels on my conscience.
[Chorus]
And they call me by a name he'll never learn to say.
I just nod and smile in the civic grey.
[Bridge]

not the forms I've filled, not the price I have paid.
This cobalt suit is a flag for a country of one.
[Outro]
My papers are stamped. It's the third of November.
Isherwood’s waiting. I try to remember.
