Influenced by David Bowie, Brian Eno, Scott Walker, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop. David Bowery was born David Kowalczyk in a Polish-speaking household in North Manchester. At 22, he spent his life savings on a vintage saxophone and a cobalt blue suit, an act of artistic defiance that led to a five-year silence from his factory-worker father. He adopted the name 'Bowery' and began writing theatrical, sax-heavy art-rock in his small flat in a converted mill, where he lives with a broken mannequin named 'Isherwood'. His songs are dispatches from the beautiful ruins of post-industrial cities and fractured families.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
(He says) "The railing's cold. It's quarter past nine, feels like November."
(I say) "Your hands are chapped. Like I remember."
(He says) "Still got that suit? The one from the box with the tear?"
(I say) "Yeah. And the sax. They're what got me from there to here."

[Pre-Chorus]
It kept me warm when the boiler broke down in the mill.
It bought me a voice when you wanted me still.

[Chorus]
So let's not talk of demolition.
We're standing here. That's the position.

[Verse 2]
(He says) "You and your mother threw crusts for the gulls from this spot."
(I say) "You said 'Nie rzucaj chleba', told me that God would not...".
(He says) "Forget. I know. The view looks different when you're old."
(I say) "The air up here's just cobalt and cold."

[Pre-Chorus]
I saw the plans. I drew a new floor for the life that I've got.
It isn't a palace, but it's all that you're not.

[Chorus]
So let's not talk of demolition.
We're standing here. That's the position.

[Bridge]
(I say) "There's scaffolding 'round my memory of you..."
(He says) "Is it holding it up, or is it walling me out?"

[Outro]
We're standing here!
We're standing here.
