Influenced by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, John Prine, Blaze Foley. Townes Van Roy was born between two worlds in Del Rio, Texas, to a Border Patrol agent father and a mother from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. He learned to speak Spanish in his grandmother’s kitchen near a specific panadería on Calle Hidalgo and learned about heartbreak when the border separated his own family. After dropping out of high school, he picked up his father’s old Yamaha nylon-string and started writing songs about the ghosts of the Rio Grande. He now lives in a small adobe house in the Terlingua ghost town, writing stark, third-person portraits of the drifters and lost souls he calls neighbors.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Manny checks his hands by the glow of a Valero sign,
Left one steady on the Ford's cold wheel, right one tracing a line.
He’s three months shy of thirty, the age the maps all change,
When the limestone in a good man's bones starts to rearrange.

[Chorus]
'Cause the fault line in the blood runs true and deep,
A quiet tremor for a promise you can't keep.
But I ain't the river bed the flash flood comes to sweep,
I'm the seed that's buried, fighting in its sleep.

[Verse 2]
Last night she took his coffee cup, her fingers brushed his skin,
He felt a hum beneath the surface where the leaving might begin.
She said, "You went somewhere else, mi amor, you went somewhere I ain't."
He just watched her face get painted by the window's fading paint.

[Bridge]
He saw it in his father, that vibration in the thumb,
Fumbling with a cigarette before the words would come.
His abuela whispered once, "Es el polvo, it's the land."
A little ghost of motion you can't still with your own hand.

[Outro]
The sun hits the horizon, a fragile seam of red,
He lifts his coffee to his lips, to still the voice inside his head.
And there it is against the cup, a moth's wing in the light,
The first note of the oldest song, saying goodbye to the night.
