Influenced by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, John Prine, Blaze Foley. Townes Van Roy was born between two worlds in Del Rio, Texas, to a Border Patrol agent father and a mother from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. He learned to speak Spanish in his grandmother’s kitchen near a specific panadería on Calle Hidalgo and learned about heartbreak when the border separated his own family. After dropping out of high school, he picked up his father’s old Yamaha nylon-string and started writing songs about the ghosts of the Rio Grande. He now lives in a small adobe house in the Terlingua ghost town, writing stark, third-person portraits of the drifters and lost souls he calls neighbors.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Nacho’s Everlast gloves left a salt-crust stain
Right beside the tear from the summer of the Golden Gloves.
I used to feel you both, a hard-hitting rain,
The thud of your futures hittin' my gut with love.
You learned to clinch and break on my stitched-up seams,
Practiced the timing of each other’s desperate dreams.

[Chorus]
One hand raised to the camera’s flash,
The other man's ghost in the money and the cash.
The final bell rings out on an empty floor,
And the winner don’t live here anymore.

[Verse 2]
Then Sal's left hook got fast, and his footwork clean,
He started tasting blood, and it tasted like a plan.
Nacho’d just watch him from the corner, lookin' lean.
He said, “Sal, you got the reach, I just got the want.”
Then he’d wrap Sal’s hands tight against the comin’ dawn.

[Chorus]
One hand raised to the camera’s flash,
The other man's ghost in the money and the cash.
The final bell rings out on an empty floor,
And the winner don’t live here anymore.

[Bridge]
Four ounce leather.
Bell rings forever.
One man’s name.
Just dust and weather.

[Outro]
My chains don't even groan for him anymore.
There's a fine coat of dust on the boxing-gym floor.
