Influenced by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, John Prine, Blaze Foley. Townes Van Roy was born between two worlds in Del Rio, Texas, to a Border Patrol agent father and a mother from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. He learned to speak Spanish in his grandmother’s kitchen near a specific panadería on Calle Hidalgo and learned about heartbreak when the border separated his own family. After dropping out of high school, he picked up his father’s old Yamaha nylon-string and started writing songs about the ghosts of the Rio Grande. He now lives in a small adobe house in the Terlingua ghost town, writing stark, third-person portraits of the drifters and lost souls he calls neighbors.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The deed from the Brewster County clerk is sittin' on the dash.
Your abuela's name is misspelled in '47's fading slash.
This rental smells like Big Red and the dust from that last mile,
And I got the kind of freedom that ain't worth the while.

[Chorus]
So here's your Caliche Claim, Luz, the rock is finally broke.
A hundred years of whispers turned to engine-ticking smoke.

[Verse 2]
Remember you said, "It ain't a curse, it's just the ground we know"?
I sold it for the water rights, for a chance to watch somethin' grow.
Somewhere the sun don't burn the faith right out of every seed,
But that ain't a kind of harvest that a man like me will need.

[Chorus]
Yeah, here's your Caliche Claim, Luz, the rock is finally broke.
A hundred years of whispers turned to engine-ticking smoke.

[Bridge]
The agent from Odessa, he shook my hand so hard,
The bones all felt rearranged behind the Valero card.
And I felt the fault line shift then, the whole damn strata changed.

[Outro]
Got the deed right here beside me. Got a tank of Texaco gas.
And a rearview full of nothing, comin' up on me too fast.
