Influenced by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, John Prine, Blaze Foley. Townes Van Roy was born between two worlds in Del Rio, Texas, to a Border Patrol agent father and a mother from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. He learned to speak Spanish in his grandmother’s kitchen near a specific panadería on Calle Hidalgo and learned about heartbreak when the border separated his own family. After dropping out of high school, he picked up his father’s old Yamaha nylon-string and started writing songs about the ghosts of the Rio Grande. He now lives in a small adobe house in the Terlingua ghost town, writing stark, third-person portraits of the drifters and lost souls he calls neighbors.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Leo traced her name on the S.S. Grandcamp,
April fifteenth, 'forty-seven, heat like a wool-damp lamp.
He was breathin' in the dust off the ammonium sacks,
Felt the grit like a secret coatin' the railroad tracks.

[Chorus]
He said, "Maria, your laugh's the only clean thing here."
Then he looked at his boots and just swallowed his beer.
Said, "It's a Texas City kind of love, I guess."
Just a layer of dust on a goddamn mess.

[Verse 2]
Later on her porch, screen door slappin' time,
The KXTN broadcast bleedin' through the pine.
She said, "You smell like the bottom of a dry well, Leo."
He just cracked a Big Red, said, "Yeah, I know how they go."

[Chorus]
He said, "Maria, your laugh's the only clean thing here."
Then he looked at his boots and just swallowed his beer.
Said, "It's a Texas City kind of love, I guess."
Just a layer of dust on a goddamn mess.

[Bridge]
(BEAT SWITCH: Music strips back to a single, starkly picked nylon-string guitar. Tempo slows slightly. Voice becomes more intimate, almost a whisper.)
He touched the turquoise seam on her cheap stone ring.
Said, "I'll see you tomorrow, nine o'clock, don't forget a thing."

[Outro]
Just the Gulf coast dust settling on the night.
And a sky full of nothing but pale starlight.
