Influenced by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Toots & The Maytals. Robert Markel learned his first chords on a beat-up guitar in a Trench Town yard, taught by the same hands that his mother, Deloris, worked to the bone at two jobs to support him. He became a mason to pay the bills, learning to build walls that were straight and true, a philosophy he pours into his roots reggae anthems. The songs are for his community, for the struggle, and for the one promise he still hasn't kept: to build his mother a house where she can finally rest.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The First Street curb still chipped where mi drop di water drum.
August sun so hot, mi hear di whole city hum.
Feel di grit of di sand mix under my nail bed,
Every word di foreman shout still echo in my head.

[Chorus]
Carry di red dirt inna mi boot-sole deep.
Carry di zinc roof sound when mi try fi sleep.
Carry di weight of every cinder block,
'Til di promise I made finally unlock.

[Verse 2]
She watch me from di doorway, wipe flour pon her dress.
Say, "Son, mind di mortar nuh set with bitterness."
That Tuesday, di breeze feel different through di mesh-wire door,
Like it whisperin' 'bout a storm we never seen before.

[Chorus]
Carry di red dirt inna mi boot-sole deep.
Carry di zinc roof sound when mi try fi sleep.
Carry di weight of every cinder block,
'Til di promise I made finally unlock.

[Bridge]
This whole world a spirit level that nuh balance straight.
Just tryin' fi find di plumb line before it get too late.

[Chorus]
(Countermelody sings: Build it up now... build it up now... for she...)
Carry di red dirt inna mi boot-sole deep.
Carry di zinc roof sound when mi try fi sleep.
Carry di weight of every cinder block,
'Til di promise I made finally unlock.

[Outro]
Yeah… one one stone.
