Influenced by Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Femi Kuti, Hugh Masekela. Fela Kuyo was raised in the shadow of the University of Ibadan, the eldest of six siblings who became a parent at fourteen when his activist father was silenced. His only inheritance was his father's political library and an old saxophone, which he taught himself to play by listening to Fela Kuti records. Today, he still lives in his hometown, his sprawling Afrobeat epics telling the story of a man who carries the weight of his family, his history, and his nation in every note he plays.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I trace your name on the beer-sweat of this Star bottle.
Seven o'clock news just finished, another crooked proposal.
I'm counting their futures, Baba, one by one, a full six now.
The DJ is playing a sweet one, but I'm drafting this plan somehow.
On the back of a napkin, a blueprint for a better crime.
(one)

[Chorus]
This is the plan, my father, our small setback variance.
We build the first storey a little bit closer to the sun.
We find a way to dance right past their ignorance.

[Verse 2]
Their surveyor's map is a joke drawn in expensive ink.
"The load-bearing walls are a lie," he said with a knowing wink.
He meant the whole nation, every single load-bearing brick.
So we use their own twisted permits, that's the beautiful trick.
The temperature drops when the sea breeze finally blows in from the coast.

[Chorus]
This is the work, my father, our sweet setback variance.
The foundation's holding, a little bit closer to the sun.
We find a way to dance directly on their ignorance.

[Bridge]
Some nights this old saxophone feels like rebar in my hand.
But then the horns answer back, a language they'll never understand.

[Chorus]
This is the roof, my father, our final setback variance.
The neighbours can see it shining, so much closer to the sun.
Now the whole street is dancing, and laughing at their ignorance.

[Outro]
Laughing on it.
(two, three, four, five, six... we build!)
