Tension Cable

[Verse 1]
Voicemail dot three gee pee, timestamped last October.
The glow from the Signal Hill oil derricks paints the blinds over.
I hit play just to map the stress fractures in your tone,
A sound file saved as "Home" on a phone that isn't home.

[Chorus]
Static and your voice, a perfect cantilever.
Hanging in the silence, holding up the ether.

[Verse 2]
You’re laughing through the speaker, something 'bout the traffic on the 405.
"'Don't forget the wine,' you said, 'the cheap stuff from the Ralphs, I'll be there by five.'"
Just a simple message, never meant to be load-bearing,
Now it’s the foundation for this whole damn building I'm repairing.

[Chorus]
Static and your voice, a perfect cantilever.
Hanging in the silence, holding up the ether.

[Bridge]
A hundred sixty kilobytes, a temporary shore,
Propping up a ceiling that ain't level anymore.

[Outro]
The hiss and then your laugh. Then the click. I hit rewind.
Just a little tension cable holding up my mind.
