Influenced by Sade, Etta James, Bill Withers, Fela Kuti. Adaeze Umbra was raised in Manchester's Moss Side, translating council forms for her Nigerian parents by day and memorizing their Stax records by night. She found her voice somewhere between the post-industrial grey of the North and the vibrant Igbo culture of her home. After dropping out of a literature degree, she began writing songs while working in a fabric shop, turning the textures of her two worlds into a powerful, contemporary soul music. Her songs are for anyone who's ever felt like a translator in their own life.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Kemi, it's me. The 142 bus is pulling up on Wilmslow Road.
(beep)
Sorry, I... I never know when to start. The glass of this phone box is cold on my cheek.
It's Tuesday, just past nine, and I saw David's hands tonight.
They weren't mending a thing, just... unspooling a lie, stitch by stitch.

[Chorus - Male Vocal]
A truth you don't ask for
Is a debt you can't pay back

[Verse 2]
At The Temple bar, he bought her a gin, the expensive kind.
Said her hair was "like spun silk," the same line he used when his thumb traced your spine.
His hand on the small of her back was a tailor's chalk mark I couldn't unsee.
I know this cloth wasn't woven for me to cut, but the pattern was fraying, you see.

[Chorus - Male Vocal]
A truth you don't ask for
Is a debt you can't pay back

[Bridge]
I know the weight of this thread I'm passing to your hands.
But a silence can be a heavier garment than you'd planned.

[Outro]
(sound of a sigh, traffic fades further)
Anyway... call me back.
Or don't.
