Influenced by Sade, Etta James, Bill Withers, Fela Kuti. Adaeze Umbra was raised in Manchester's Moss Side, translating council forms for her Nigerian parents by day and memorizing their Stax records by night. She found her voice somewhere between the post-industrial grey of the North and the vibrant Igbo culture of her home. After dropping out of a literature degree, she began writing songs while working in a fabric shop, turning the textures of her two worlds into a powerful, contemporary soul music. Her songs are for anyone who's ever felt like a translator in their own life.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The blue biscuit tin on this polished wood floor.
First Tuesday in August, I don't know me anymore.
It doesn't hold your needles, your chalk, or your thread,
just the cold weight of silence where your hands would have led.

[Chorus]
And I filled up the world, didn't I, nne?
But the deed in my hands is a tear in the weave.

[Verse 2]
The metal is cold, the Danish dancers are faded.
My new car key inside feels lonely and weighted.
Papa said, "Adaeze, this is our whole story,"
his calloused thumbs tracing the Queen's face for glory.

[Chorus]
And I finished the game, didn't I, nne?
But the flat in my name has unraveled the day.

[Bridge]
The rain on the glass of this Ancoats new-build
is a language I know, but the meaning is killed.
My hands don't remember the right way to hold.

[Chorus]
And I won the whole war, didn't I, nne?
But this victory's a pattern I can't seem to trace.

[Outro]
A lighter tin now.
The echo inside.
