Influenced by Sade, Etta James, Bill Withers, Fela Kuti. Adaeze Umbra was raised in Manchester's Moss Side, translating council forms for her Nigerian parents by day and memorizing their Stax records by night. She found her voice somewhere between the post-industrial grey of the North and the vibrant Igbo culture of her home. After dropping out of a literature degree, she began writing songs while working in a fabric shop, turning the textures of her two worlds into a powerful, contemporary soul music. Her songs are for anyone who's ever felt like a translator in their own life.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The A57 footbridge has a tremor from the lorries,
we called it the fault line between our two stories.
Up there the city lights bleed out like a projection,
a rumour of Lagos in the Longsight direction.
Your hands smelled of metal from the chain-link fence,
nothing past the M60 ever made much sense.

[Verse 2]
Just after eight on a Tuesday in November,
you traced the postal codes on my palm, I remember.
I told you your heart was true north, then I coughed and looked away,
said, "Forget I said that, it's just a stupid thing to say."
You laughed, but the sound got lost in the diesel drone,
two kids in uncharted territory, completely alone.

[Bridge]
But we weren't mapping futures, we were drawing a new border,
running from the blue lights and the civic disorder.
That map I drew you wasn't love, it was an escape route,
a legend for a country we were lying about.

[Outro]
Now every contour line on this page is just a faded scar,
proving how close we were to where we are.
