Girder and Ghost

Influenced by Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Gil Scott-Heron, Claude Debussy, Bill Withers. Barry Whyte learned piano at the knee of his grandmother, Gussie, in the Gullah Geechee heartland of coastal South Carolina. At 20, he took a one-way bus ticket to Philadelphia, seeking the sound of the city's soul tradition. His music is the conversation between those two worlds: the Lowcountry's tidal patience and Philly's concrete grit. He still works as an accompanist at a dance studio, writing songs about his girlfriend, a city architect who has never seen the ocean he calls home.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Amber sodium spills on Fairmount brick, it's 3:47, Tuesday night.
And every phone in every room begins to scream with blinding light.
The floorboards feel like winter ice beneath our feet, we just stand there.
Reading the same damn scary words hanging in the silent air.

[Chorus]
But we are the girders in this city's ghost.
We are the load-bearing wall they fear the most.
Let 'em shake the ground, baby, let 'em try.
This foundation's deeper than their sky.

[Verse 2]
A light comes on across the street, a window shade is pulled aside.
There's nowhere in these rowhouse bones for any of our fear to hide.
"'Did you feel that?'" you whispered low, your hand a vise around my own.
We're every rooftop, every stoop, every single paving stone.

[Chorus]
'Cause we are the girders in this city's ghost.
We are the load-bearing wall they fear the most.
Let 'em shake the ground, baby, let 'em try.
This foundation's deeper than their sky.

[Bridge]
They think these walls are only plaster, wire, dust and memories.
They don't know Gussie's people built shelters out of cypress knees.

[Flute Solo]

[Outro]
We are the girders... in their ghost.
This foundation's deeper... than they know.
