Influenced by Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Gil Scott-Heron, Claude Debussy, Bill Withers. Barry Whyte learned piano at the knee of his grandmother, Gussie, in the Gullah Geechee heartland of coastal South Carolina. At 20, he took a one-way bus ticket to Philadelphia, seeking the sound of the city's soul tradition. His music is the conversation between those two worlds: the Lowcountry's tidal patience and Philly's concrete grit. He still works as an accompanist at a dance studio, writing songs about his girlfriend, a city architect who has never seen the ocean he calls home.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Your T-square casts a shadow on the plans for Society Hill.
It's quarter past eleven on a Tuesday, and the air is deathly still.
I'm tracing the grain in this old heart-pine floor with my thumb,
Practicing the silence for the quiet that's to come.

[Chorus]
And the tumblers fall in the lock, a tiny metal sigh.
It's the last good sound before the water's high.
This is how the hull gives way, no crash, no righteous squall,
Just the quiet click of tumblers when they fall.

[Verse 2]
The radiator hisses, sounds like surf on a far-off shore.
A memory of Saint Helena I can't live in anymore.
You're bringing home the city's chill deep inside your bones,
Another hewn-off piece of me you'll leave among the stones.

[Bridge]
"It's like we're sanding against the grain," you said last night, so low.
It's the final low tide of the heart, with nowhere left to go.

[Outro]
The tumblers fall.
That's all.
