Influenced by Noah Kahan, The Tallest Man on Earth, Gillian Welch, Jason Isbell. Silas Carrick grew up on Monhegan Island, Maine, a remote fishing outpost with a year-round population of 64. He learned to play on a beat-up banjo he found in the back of the island's one-room library during a winter storm that cut them off from the mainland. Now based in Boston, his songs are dispatches from the space between two worlds: the tidal rhythms of his past and the relentless hum of the city. He still measures time in ferry crossings and writes about the things that don't wash away.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The Kellers left their porch light on for seventeen straight nights.
Through the pines, I'd hear their screen door give a tired little sigh.
They were patching up the hull, I guess, with weekend trips and wine,
But some boats ain't built for weather that turns on a dime.

[Chorus]
A thing don't break all at once,
it just learns a different bend.
And you can't see the stress marks 'til the bitter, bitter end.

[Verse 2]
That first week of October, the U-Haul blocked the lane.
He was saying, "It's just some things, we'll sort it in the spring."
Her face was the color of the sea before the heavy rain,
And I saw him take the wind chimes down, the ones that she brought from Spain.

[Chorus]
A thing don't break all at once,
it just learns a different bend.
And you can't see the stress marks 'til the bitter, bitter end.

[Bridge]
Now the only sound from over there's the foghorn's low complaint,
And a square of faded siding that's crying out for paint.

[Outro]
The porch light's finally out now.
Yeah, the wait is at an end.
