Influenced by Sly & the Family Stone, Funkadelic, War, The Isley Brothers, Shuggie Otis. Sly Stoney was named after a funk legend by his parents, a fact that has haunted him ever since. After dropping out of an Urban Planning program at UC Davis, he moved back to his native West Oakland with a mountain of student debt, a 1972 fuzz bass, and an oversized houseplant named Larry. His music is the sound of that decision: paranoid, joyful, deeply funky, and wrestling with the feeling of being the only one in his family who chose art over a career path. These are anthems for the gloriously uncertain.

Lyrics

[Chorus]
Did we know we were building an altar all this time?
In the kitchen, by the sink, with your hand next to mine?

[Verse 1]
That BART ticket from last October,
stuck to a tube of dollar-store glue.
We tossed it in here when the ride was over,
same as the burnt-out fuse from channel two.
A whole decade's worth of loose change and wire,
forgotten receipts piling up higher.

[Chorus]
Did we know we were building an altar all this time?
In the kitchen, by the sink, with your hand next to mine?

[Verse 2]
A single gold hoop earring, a faded Polaroid.
The cold copper tooth of a key for a lock we destroyed.
"Keep this for me," you said, and never asked again.
So it lives in the dark with a dried-out ballpoint pen.

[Bridge]
The whole damn house is humming a tune I barely know,
the circuit of a memory that won't let go.
The hum of a battery's last static sigh,
under the drone of the 580 in the sky.

[Outro]
Did we know we were building an altar?
All this time?
