Resistor's Lament

Influenced by Sly & the Family Stone, Funkadelic, War, The Isley Brothers, Shuggie Otis. Sly Stoney was named after a funk legend by his parents, a fact that has haunted him ever since. After dropping out of an Urban Planning program at UC Davis, he moved back to his native West Oakland with a mountain of student debt, a 1972 fuzz bass, and an oversized houseplant named Larry. His music is the sound of that decision: paranoid, joyful, deeply funky, and wrestling with the feeling of being the only one in his family who chose art over a career path. These are anthems for the gloriously uncertain.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The night-light on the power strip went green at 3:47 AM.
Right when your voice clipped out, a perfect square wave in the RAM.
My thumbprint left a ghost of heat on the cold black glass.
"Make sure you water Larry," you said, a joke about the past.

[Chorus]
(Whistled melody carries the hook)
And this quiet has its own damn sound,
a circuit humming underground.

[Verse 2]
The poster of the Bay Bridge curls, peeling from the summer damp.
I still haven't fixed the feedback loop from that old pawn shop amp.
It's a low-grade static between the stations I can find.
A tiny, broken promise I left oscillating in your mind.

[Chorus]
(Whistled melody carries the hook)
And this quiet has its own damn sound,
a circuit humming underground.

[Bridge]
Funny how a loose connection makes the whole thing blow.
Was it my bad solder joint from three Octobers ago?

[Chorus]
(Key change up a half step)
Yeah, this quiet has its own damn sound,
and I'm the circuit humming underground.
