Influenced by Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Gil Scott-Heron, Claude Debussy, Bill Withers. Barry Whyte learned piano at the knee of his grandmother, Gussie, in the Gullah Geechee heartland of coastal South Carolina. At 20, he took a one-way bus ticket to Philadelphia, seeking the sound of the city's soul tradition. His music is the conversation between those two worlds: the Lowcountry's tidal patience and Philly's concrete grit. He still works as an accompanist at a dance studio, writing songs about his girlfriend, a city architect who has never seen the ocean he calls home.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The receiver felt like ice against my ear, October '19.
The dead air after the click was a brand new kind of keen.
Ninety seconds ticking on the VCR clock's green glow,
A hairline fracture starting in a hull you'd never know.

[Chorus]
You draw a hard line, baby,
I'm still sanding down the grain.
You build a perfect angle,
I just pray it holds the strain.

[Verse 2]
It smelled just like the pluff mud when the water gets real low,
Exposing all the oyster shells the tourists never know.
You said, "It's not that deep, B," and your voice was glass and chrome,
But I know a vessel's ruined by the leak you can't see from home.

[Chorus]
You draw a hard line, baby,
I'm still sanding down the grain.
You build a perfect angle,
I just pray it holds the strain.

[Bridge]
That quiet was a hammer blow I'm feeling to this day.
Every dovetail joint I try to set just splinters and gives way.

[Outro]
The receiver felt like ice... that VCR was green.
October '19. And the water found the seam.
