Influenced by Sly & the Family Stone, Funkadelic, War, The Isley Brothers, Shuggie Otis. Sly Stoney was named after a funk legend by his parents, a fact that has haunted him ever since. After dropping out of an Urban Planning program at UC Davis, he moved back to his native West Oakland with a mountain of student debt, a 1972 fuzz bass, and an oversized houseplant named Larry. His music is the sound of that decision: paranoid, joyful, deeply funky, and wrestling with the feeling of being the only one in his family who chose art over a career path. These are anthems for the gloriously uncertain.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The August sun made the MacArthur pillars sweat.
You etched your defiance in my wet cement.
Ozone smell from the third rail, a Tuesday afternoon haze.
You tuned your cheap guitar to the 5:17's low bass.
There was a fierce kind of joy in how you took up all that space.

[Chorus]
I'm the choir that you built with rebar and with sound.
I'm the anthem of your feet on this forgotten ground.

[Verse 2]
The signal started dropping out somewhere around last fall.
First it was a whisper, then it was a feedback wall.
You texted 'meet me at the spot,' but the echo was the only one who came.
So I just held the empty air and the fading of a name.

[Chorus]
I'm the choir that you built with rebar and with sound.
I'm the anthem of your feet on this forgotten ground.

[Bridge]
Last night, one of you came back and traced the letters with a thumb.
The cold in my concrete told me what you had become.
You never even looked up when the northbound train went past.

[Outro]
The choir's gone all quiet now.
The anthem's just a hum.
