A Double Exposure

Influenced by Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Gil Scott-Heron, Claude Debussy, Bill Withers. Barry Whyte learned piano at the knee of his grandmother, Gussie, in the Gullah Geechee heartland of coastal South Carolina. At 20, he took a one-way bus ticket to Philadelphia, seeking the sound of the city's soul tradition. His music is the conversation between those two worlds: the Lowcountry's tidal patience and Philly's concrete grit. He still works as an accompanist at a dance studio, writing songs about his girlfriend, a city architect who has never seen the ocean he calls home.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The sodium vapor off of Dauphin bleeds across the glass.
Gussie, I’m trying to find your focus in this city, but it moves too fast.
It's a blurry print, it's all wrong-lit, it's all concrete and steel grain.
And the wet-wool smell of the August air here don't smell nothing like the rain.

[Chorus]
This whole city is a double-exposure,
And I can't bring you any closer.
Yeah, this whole life is a double-exposure,
And I can't bring you any closer.

[Verse 2]
The marsh-light on St. Helena Sound, that was a different kind of burn.
I can see you on the porch steps now, waiting for the tide to turn.
You pointed past the cypress knees, the water dark and slow.
Said, "That ain't no spirit, boy, that's just the truth looking for a place to go."

[Bridge]
Every shot I take up here is framed all wrong.
My whole damn life is just the space where you belong.

[Outro]
A double-exposure...
Can't bring you any closer.
