Spandrel Arch

Influenced by Phyllis Hyman, Norman Connors, Nina Simone, Sade. Phyllis Hyland was raised in the shadow of the steel mills of Lorain, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie. At nineteen, she moved to Philadelphia to study architecture but dropped out to pursue the Philly-soul sound she'd idolized on her mother's records. Her songs are architectural structures of their own, built with a rich contralto and the raw materials of her Rust Belt past. She still keeps her grandfather's architect's ruler on her piano, a reminder to build things that last.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The Charles Berry Bridge groaned up for the ten o'clock ore boat
August heat rising off the girders, that flat grey horizon afloat
You smelled like lake water and soap, a familiar ache in my throat
A perfect elevation drawing, the saddest thing I wrote

[Chorus]
You built this memory on a fault line
And called it a spandrel arch, so beautiful and fine
It's just the space between the pieces that were never truly mine

[Verse 2]
You traced the rust patterns with a dirty thumb, looked right through my face
Said, "Some things are built to last forever in one goddamn place"
I saw the slag heap skyline, the slow-motion structural disgrace
Felt the tension cable in my spine getting ready to break

[Chorus]
You built this memory on a fault line
And called it a spandrel arch, so beautiful and fine
It's just the space between the pieces that were never truly mine

[Bridge]
(Instrumental Breakdown)
Just a hairline fracture, a whisper of stress
But a blueprint for ruin is a promise, I guess

[Chorus]
You built this memory on a fault line
And called it a spandrel arch, so beautiful and fine
It's just the space between the pieces that were never truly mine

[Outro]
The warning bell still rings on nights like this
Just a counterweight swinging in the mist
