Influenced by Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Gil Scott-Heron, Claude Debussy, Bill Withers. Barry Whyte learned piano at the knee of his grandmother, Gussie, in the Gullah Geechee heartland of coastal South Carolina. At 20, he took a one-way bus ticket to Philadelphia, seeking the sound of the city's soul tradition. His music is the conversation between those two worlds: the Lowcountry's tidal patience and Philly's concrete grit. He still works as an accompanist at a dance studio, writing songs about his girlfriend, a city architect who has never seen the ocean he calls home.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The Baldwin upright in Studio B is still warm, it's half past two.
Your drafting pencil tucked behind your ear, a fleck of white paint on your shoe.
The specific way the sodium light cuts a line across the sprung wood floor.
These are the moments I'm hoarding, girl, behind a locked and secret door.

[Chorus]
Yeah, this is the good wood I'm savin'.
These are the cypress knees of my days.
I'm building a memory's boat, baby,
For when the tide of right now pulls away.

[Verse 2]
The Lowcountry simmer of your laugh over the SEPTA train's loud groan.
You said, "I swear that building's breathin'," talking on your telephone.
The smell of pluff mud on my jacket that I just can't ever wash out.
This is the quiet kind of love they never make a song about.

[Interlude]
(Female voice, filtered like a phone call, calm and measured)
"The foundation's solid. It's got good bones. We can build on this. We can definitely build on this."

[Bridge]
They say you can't take it with you, but that ain't Gullah truth I know.
You gotta caulk the seams with what you love, for the places your heart will go.

[Chorus]
Yeah, this is the good wood I'm savin'.
These are the cypress knees of my days.
I'm building a memory's boat, baby,
For when the tide of right now pulls away.

[Outro]
The good wood.
Savin' all the good wood for you.
