Influenced by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer. Robert Markel learned two things from his carpenter father in Port Antonio, Jamaica: how to build a sturdy house and how to write an honest song. At nineteen, he left the lush green hills for the concrete grit of Kingston's Trench Town, working construction by day and turning the clash of his two worlds into music by night. His songs, built with a craftsman's patience, tell stories of migration, spirit, and the search for balance in a world off-kilter. He still lives in Kingston with his partner Simone, an archivist who has catalogued all his lyrics but has never seen the rural parish they so often describe.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
David bend di tenpenny nail pon di cedar plank.
Tuesday, just before di sun get cruel and rank.
Him pocket di extra foot a copper wire, slick and slow.
Look pon me and smile like is a seed him just a-sow.

[Chorus]
And now di whole house lean, it lean pon what him do.
How I fit mi square to a joint dat isn't true?
Di plumb line swing and settle pon a silent kind a-wrong.
And you a ask me how mi day was long.

[Verse 2]
"Is just a likkle trim," him seh, "di boss man nah miss it."
But di grain of di thing, it run against di spirit.
Him take it up so easy, like him born with crooked hand.
A splinter a truth now buried in dis promised land.

[Chorus]
And now di whole house lean, it lean pon what him do.
How I fit mi square to a joint dat isn't true?
Di plumb line swing and settle pon a silent kind a-wrong.
And you a ask me how mi day was long.

[Bridge]
If mi talk, di friendship crack right down di grain.
If mi quiet, di silence feel like November rain.
Mi measure twice, but di cut still feel like sin.
Which board mi pull fi let di right light in?

[Chorus]
And now di whole house lean, it lean pon what him do.
How I fit mi square to a joint dat isn't true?
Di plumb line swing and settle pon a silent kind a-wrong.
Tell me, Simone, how your day was long?

[Outro]
Yeah... di plumb line swing.
Tell me di level thing...
