Influenced by Karen Dalton, Gillian Welch, Fred Neil, Sandy Denny, Dock Boggs. Kara Dalton was born in the Arkansas Ozarks and never saw a reason to leave. She plays the same cracked 1950s 12-string guitar her grandfather taught her on, its sound as raw and resonant as the hollows she calls home. She and her partner Sam, a stonemason, are slowly rebuilding an old cabin by hand on a piece of land backing up to the national forest. These songs are written on the porch after dark, mapping the stubborn landscape of a long-term love and a life tied to the seasons.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The mule skinner's hammer on the county-line chert
Rings a different song than the one I first heard
They say every seven years, your body's made new
So what's left of the girl who first laid eyes on you?

[Verse 2]
We pulled up the floorboards, black with old rain
Numbered them in chalk so they'd fit back the same
You wiped your hands on your jeans, said "'It's the memory holds up the frame.'"
And I knew we weren't building the same house again

[Verse 3]
That August the well went dry, the creek bed just steam
And the dogwood we planted looked dead in a dream
But I thought of the roots, pulling water from deep
Holding onto a promise the branches couldn't keep

[Bridge]
Sometimes I wake up and can't feel my own hand
Just the hum of the power line strung over this land
A stranger's own ghost, warm in a borrowed-bone bed
Trying to echo a promise somebody once said

[Outro]
So let the river take the banks, let the rust take the nail
This is sawdust and marrow, not some fairy tale
We're building a new thing with sweat on the stone
And it's gonna stand tall on these good bones
