Lyrics
Ms. Able's cursive on a seed-packet from '98
Says "Maypop, a balm for the restless, a beautiful weight."
I found it tucked inside a joist, where the dry rot got in
A little ghost of paper, impossibly thin.
[Chorus]
The Maypop vine is crawling up the stud wall frame
Oh Ms. Able, I think I finally learned your name.
[Verse 2]
Sam's hammer rings on chert rock, a mile off you can hear it
The raw pine smells like turpentine and summer spirit.
I know one day we'll watch the rain from a finished porch
And miss the taste of sawdust on this holy kind of work.
[Chorus]
The Maypop vine is reaching for the new roof beam
Oh Ms. Able, it's wilder than you told me in a dream.
[Bridge]
The well water's cold on my lips in the July heat
Like a promise this holler's determined to keep.
[Chorus]
The Maypop blooms are open on the porch we made
Oh Ms. Able, I'm staying in the good shade.
[Outro]
A beautiful weight.
