Fault Line Lullaby

Influenced by Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mad Season, Stone Temple Pilots, The Melvins. As the oldest of six in a West Virginia factory town, Lane Stayton had to parent his siblings while still a child himself. The resentment and fierce loyalty of that stolen youth fuels his music—a heavy, sludgy grunge built on down-tuned guitars and his own pained, double-tracked vocal harmonies. His songs, written on a beat-up acoustic in a small apartment overlooking the Ohio River, are raw dispatches from the heart of post-industrial America.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
(Voicemail beep, sound of an idling truck, a tired sigh)
Hey. Uhm. It's me.
The call box for the Ballard Apartments is still busted.
Same names on the mail slots, just faded out a little more.
It's August, feels like the asphalt is breathing hot slag right up at me.

[Chorus]
This town's a fault line lullaby they sing to your marrow.
We inherit the tremor, we just learn to stand narrow.
I keep hoping for a landslide to take a different street.
But it's always our feet.

[Verse 2]
Remember old Calloway down by the tracks?
He swore he could smell a flood coming in the creosote ties.
He'd say, "Boy, you can't wash this river off you, it's in the deed."
Been tasting pennies in the tap water all damn week.

[Bridge]
I tried to fix your mom's screen door spring again.
Just sat on the porch, holding the pliers, looking at the bend.
Felt like I was holding the same damn tool in the same damn hand as him.

(long pause, sound of traffic passing)

...Anyway.
Just, uh... call me back when you get this.
(click)

(Music stops for 4 seconds of silence)

[Outro]
(Sound of phone fumbling, clicks back on)
...Wait. The kudzu's got the old tipple covered now.
Looks kinda beautiful, I guess.
(hangs up for real)
