Influenced by Sly & the Family Stone, Funkadelic, War, The Isley Brothers, Shuggie Otis. Sly Stoney was named after a funk legend by his parents, a fact that has haunted him ever since. After dropping out of an Urban Planning program at UC Davis, he moved back to his native West Oakland with a mountain of student debt, a 1972 fuzz bass, and an oversized houseplant named Larry. His music is the sound of that decision: paranoid, joyful, deeply funky, and wrestling with the feeling of being the only one in his family who chose art over a career path. These are anthems for the gloriously uncertain.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Receiver one, on Adeline Street, rewires a Heathkit in the Tuesday heat.
The antenna angled at her window pane, a high-gain whisper in the coming rain.
He plots the signal path through copper lines,
to interrupt the clean, corporate designs.
Says this whole town is built on phantom code,
a forgotten message on a forgotten road.

[Chorus]
Tonight we ride the ghost frequency.
A low-watt prayer between you and me.
Hijack the air with a memory.
Yeah, tonight we ride the ghost frequency.

[Verse 2]
Receiver two, in her Dimond District room, scrolls through a life that isn't hers.
The blue screen hums a digital perfume, blurring the days into meaningless slurs.
The old group chat is a digital tomb, timestamps fading on a silent war.
She doesn't know the coming audio boom, or what the hell he's even doing it for.

[Chorus]
Tonight we ride the ghost frequency.
A low-watt prayer between you and me.
Hijack the air with a memory.
Yeah, tonight we ride the ghost frequency.

[Bridge]
The hum goes live, a shiver in the wire.
He texts her phone: "'Tune to 91.3.'"
The smell of hot vacuum tubes and circuit fire,
a sound straight out of 2017.

[Outro]
Just a signal tone, humming deep.
A promise pulled from its electric sleep.
