Torsion and Grace

[Verse 1]
The sugar shaker glints at 4:13 AM,
a tiny chrome lighthouse on the Formica tide.
She turns on a heel, wipes the grease from a spoon,
a gear-train motion under a mean little moon.
The chill from the window smells like diesel and rain,
and there's salt corrosion blooming on the windowpane.

(A muffled, distant voice, like a ghost from a two-way radio)
"You gonna order or just stare at the pot?"

Heard the cook call her name, "Maria, you're up!"
through the hiss of the steam from a porcelain cup.
She just nodded her head, never missed a blink,
re-racked the mugs on the edge of the sink.
There's a hairline fracture running down her right thumb,
from a lifetime of pressure, or just going numb.

afraid one wrong word would make the whole damn thing break.
