Influenced by Tierra Whack, Missy Elliott, André 3000, Yo-Yo Ma. Swamp Phlox, born Delilah Vance, was supposed to be a botanist. Raised in Savannah on Gullah folktales and classical cello lessons, she was halfway through a biology degree at UGA when a breakup and a cracked copy of Ableton changed everything. Now, she dissects relationships with the same precision she once used on plant cells, her syrupy Southern drawl weaving through beats made from distorted cello and the chirps of Lowcountry cicadas. She still pays her rent working at a nursery, talking to a venus flytrap named Audrey III for inspiration.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
That Waffle House coffee tastes like copper on my tongue,
Saw the Daufuskie ferry cut a line out past the sun.
It's just past three on a Tuesday, humidity on the glass,
Told myself the quiet was a symptom that would pass.
Cataloging casualties with clinical detachment,
Zippin' up the body bag on what you said had happened.
Told my friends the ecosystem self-corrected, pathogenic,
I just pruned a dying branch, that's just basic plant genetics.

[Chorus]
Got the keys, got the quiet, got the last word.
So why's the silence in this big old house sound so absurd?
Yeah I got the keys, got the quiet, got the last word.
Planted my flag on this pluff mud, feeling undisturbed.

[Verse 2]
Remember that old Gullah story 'bout the man with two faces?
You used to get so spooked, I'd trace his grin in empty spaces.
I pulled that ghost out on the porch that night in late October,
A low-tide weapon, knew the argument was over.
"Don't you bring my people into this," is what your text said later,
Too late, the mycelial network crowned me the perpetrator.
I won the war by salting all the earth around the trenches,
Now I'm sittin' on the throne, just me and all my stenches.

[Chorus]
Got the keys, got the quiet, got the last word.
So why's the silence in this big old house sound so absurd?
Yeah I got the keys, got the quiet, got the last word.
Planted my flag on this pluff mud, feeling undisturbed.

(BEAT SWITCH)

[Bridge]
A trophic cascade when the apex leaves the biome,
The victor writes the history, I'm writing mine in loam.
Check the pH of my victory, it's acidic and it's bitter,
Everything I wanted, now the whole damn room just glitters
with the dust of what I broke to get it.

[Outro]
Yeah. I got the last word.
Guess I'm the only one who heard.
