The Last Good Span

[Verse 1]
The warning sign on the Shearwater trestle
is tacked on with a spent shotgun shell.
The spray-paint's ghost from 2007,
and the high-tide smell of creosote and kelp.

[Chorus]
The rot is in the heartwood now,
but the lines are holding true.
It's the last good span above the water,
and I'm still looking for the grain in you.

[Verse 2]
The wind makes a sound through a missing plank,
a low hum from a loose iron brace.
The last July before they closed the road,
you said, "Bet this outlives all of us anyway."

[Chorus]
The rot is in the heartwood now,
but the lines are holding true.
It's the last good span above the water,
and I'm still looking for the grain in you.

[Bridge]
It's not a failure of the truss or beam,
it's just a slow return to the design.
A cantilevered memory, a half-held dream
unspooling on a forgotten survey line.

[Chorus]
The rot is in the heartwood now,
but the lines are holding true.
It's the last good span above the water,
and I'm still looking for the grain in you.

[Outro]
Yeah, the lines are holding true.
Still holding.
