Influenced by Bruce Springsteen, The War on Drugs, The 1975, Peter Gabriel. Rory Zima’s parents fled Sarajevo in the 90s and settled in Paterson, NJ, never speaking of the war they escaped. He found his own language in their unspoken history, saving up from a dishwashing job to buy a vintage Juno-106 synthesizer. Now 29 and living in a converted Jersey City garage, his anthemic, synth-soaked rock songs are dispatches from the NJ Turnpike, trying to outrun a past that isn't even his.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You left your headlights on again, under the Route 4 overpass.
The engine's ticking heat through the cracked dashboard glass.
That Tuesday in November, your breath was a white ghost.
You said a thing about the future I think I feared the most.

[Chorus]
Are we just static miles on the radio dial?
A broken signal burning for a little while?
You got your high beams on to cut away the black,
But every road you take is a road you can't come back.

[Verse 2]
We used to race the freight trains leaving the Paterson yard.
You'd let me win, then laugh and say I wasn't trying hard.
"We'll get out of this town," you swore, with rust on your tongue,
Before the frame gives out, while the engine's still young.

[Chorus]
Are we just static miles on the radio dial?
A broken signal burning for a little while?
You got your high beams on to cut away the black,
But every road you take is a road you can't come back.

[Bridge]
That heavy quiet in your house, it's the same that's now in mine.
A language that we learned across some unspoken battle line.

[Chorus]
We're only static miles on the radio dial!
A broken signal burning for a little while!
You got your high beams on to cut away the black,
But every road you take is a road you can't come back!

(Music cuts abruptly. Silence for four seconds.)

[Outro]
You left your headlights on again.
