Influenced by Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Vashti Bunyan, John Martyn. Nick Drayton grew up in the shadow of a limestone quarry in Buxton, Derbyshire. He dropped out of a university literature degree after a year and a half, finding more truth in the worn-out faces at the cafe where he now works as a barista. His hushed, intricate songs, written on a beat-up acoustic guitar, are drawn from the slow, painful end of a five-year relationship and the quiet lives he observes from behind the coffee machine in Sheffield. This is music that sounds like the grey, beautiful melancholy of the English north.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I'm the five-inch screen on his kitchen table
Face up to a ceiling cracked with damp at a quarter past three.
He hasn't touched me since the mizzle started
Just a single thumbprint, a pale swirl of chalk on my cheek.
And for weeks, my only job has been the silence,
A cold sheet of glass against his calloused palm.

[Chorus]
Then three grey dots begin to bloom in the bubble,
And a fault line cracks across the calm.
His whole reflection stills to watch the sediment settle,
To see what new stone is forming in his palm.

[Verse 2]
I remember the pressure building in the clough,
The last message sent from the quarry car park.
She said, "This is just erosion, Nick. Slow and steady."
And I held her words for him there in the dark.
He polished me clean on his jumper sleeve after,
Trying to wipe the fracture from the screen.

[Chorus]
But three grey dots are blooming in the bubble,
The first green shoot he's seen.
His whole reflection stills to watch the sediment settle,
A layer of hope on everything that's been.

[Bridge]
Does he know his breath is fogging up my corner?
Does he feel the strata of the years slip and give way?

[Chorus]
Those three grey dots, they pulse inside the bubble,
And there’s nothing left for him to say.
His whole reflection stills to watch the sediment settle,
Thankful for a world that shifted here today.

[Outro]
The dots are gone.
The text is here.
