Influenced by Rick James, Parliament-Funkadelic, The Brothers Johnson, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins. Rick Janes was raised on the industrial funk of Cleveland's West Side, learning bass from his dad's Parliament records. He pays his rent slinging drinks at The Grog Shop, a legendary local dive, where he writes lyrics on cocktail napkins about the regulars he serves. Every song is a story he overheard, a secret he was told, turned into a groove on his prized 1978 Music Man StingRay bass. This is the funk of the last call, for the people who are the last to leave.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
(Sound of a phone connection, faint street hum)
Hey, it's me... I'm walking down West 25th, the streetlights are humming.
It's that cold that bites right through the denim, you know? The November kind.
Saw our reflection in the glass at the Grog Shop, a lifetime ago.
We were two hungry foxes then, just sharp teeth in the afterglow.

[Pre-Chorus]
And I'm counting up the pieces we swapped out along the way
The bad habits, the old apartment keys, the bitter things we used to say.
Yeah, we tore out all the floorboards, we patched up all the holes
You said, "This is who we are now," and that's the only truth that holds.
And I'm just thinking... if you replace the teeth and you replace the claws...

[Chorus]
Is this the same hunt? Is this the same moon?
'Cause baby we're a different animal dancing to the same tune.
Same frame, new ghost, moving in the night,
Yeah, we're a different animal, but it still feels so right.

[Verse 2]
Sorry, just... had to stop for a second, a car was coming.
We're not those kids anymore, the ones with the cheap beer, always running.
We're two owls on a wire now, watching the whole city sleep below,
Got a different kind of vision, got a different kind of glow.

[Bridge]
And maybe that's the secret, the only grace you get,
That the ship is just the promise you haven't broken yet.

[Chorus]
Is this the same hunt? Is this the same moon?
'Cause baby we're a different animal dancing to the same tune.
Same frame, new ghost, moving in the night,
Yeah, we're a different animal, but it still feels so right.

[Outro]
(Sound of keys jangling, a distant siren)
Anyway... I'm almost home. Just wanted to...
(Line clicks, dial tone fades into an ambient drone)
