The Mending Knife

[Verse 1]
The Unicorn bar on Pike Street glows,
A paper lantern for the ghosts.
I smell the rain on the hot pavement
And see a promise break. A payment
Of attention to a stranger's hair.
I watch you from the corner stair.

[Chorus]
(Vocalist 2)
What's the shape of a kindness that cuts?
What's the name for a truth in your guts
That you swallow back down?

[Verse 2]
The damp wool of my coat feels old,
A story I was never told.
'He's a straight stitch,' you said to me,
'A simple, honest tapestry.'
But I see the snag, the single thread
Pulling on the words you said.

[Chorus]
(Vocalist 2)
What's the shape of a kindness that cuts?
What's the name for a truth in your guts
That you swallow back down?

[Bridge]
(Vocalist 1)
Not like the fog on the water
That mends every crack in the shore.
This is a city that shatters,
And asks you what you're sorry for.

[Outro]
(Vocalist 1 & 2)
A mending knife. A single seam.
The light is splitting at the beam.
