Influenced by Bruce Springsteen, The War on Drugs, The 1975, Peter Gabriel. Rory Zima’s parents fled Sarajevo in the 90s and settled in Paterson, NJ, never speaking of the war they escaped. He found his own language in their unspoken history, saving up from a dishwashing job to buy a vintage Juno-106 synthesizer. Now 29 and living in a converted Jersey City garage, his anthemic, synth-soaked rock songs are dispatches from the NJ Turnpike, trying to outrun a past that isn't even his.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The Viceroy box was crushed on the dash by your knee.
That last Tuesday in August, the hot vinyl sticking to me.
We were parked up on Garret Mountain, pointing out the city's scars.
You were tracing constellations between the transmission towers and the cars.

[Chorus]
And we were Kearny Red, burning through the static.
High beams on the Turnpike, you and me cinematic.
We were a perfect engine, a story they'd all believe.
Yeah, we were Kearny Red, the night we didn't leave.

[Verse 2]
The air tasted like exhaust and the coming autumn rain.
You put a hand on the shifter, trying to kill the pain.
"Don't look down," you said, "just watch the lights go gold."
But I could hear the lie in the story that you told.

[Chorus]
'Cause we were Kearny Red, burning through the static.
High beams on the Turnpike, you and me cinematic.
We were a perfect engine, a story they'd all believe.
Yeah, we were Kearny Red, the night we didn't leave.

[Bridge]
Then the 4:15 freight train screamed its way out to the coast.
And for a second, I wasn't pretending I loved you the most.
Just trying to keep the rust from showing through the paint.

[Chorus]
And we were Kearny Red, screaming through the static!
High beams on the Turnpike, you and me were cinematic!
We were a busted engine, a story they'd all believe!
Yeah, we were Kearny Red, the night we didn't leave!

[Outro]
Just the clicking of the hazard lights.
Fading on the shoulder of the night.
