Influenced by Tracy Chapman, Joan Armatrading, Odetta, Rhiannon Giddens. Tracy Holloway was raised on the salt marshes of St. Helena Island, learning Gullah folk songs at her grandmother's knee. A scholarship took her to Berklee College of Music, but she dropped out after professors tried to train the 'provincial' South Carolina grit out of her voice. Now back home in Beaufort, she shucks oysters to pay off her student loans and writes songs about the people and places she was told to leave behind. Her music is the sound of returning home and realizing you never should have left.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The phone screen is tackey from the heat in my hand
First week of June, the whole island's a band
Of tree frogs and cicadas. I wasn't saying your name,
Then that little green dot bloomed out of the frame.

[Chorus]
And I ain't praying to call you back
Or pull your ghost off a beaten track
Just knowing you're breathing is enough for me
A single green nerve in a digital sea.

[Verse 2]
I remember that August, down by the pier
You said, "This marsh breathes slower than people do here."
You packed one duffel bag, swore you wouldn't get caught
In the brackish water and the low-tide rot.

[Chorus]
And I ain't praying to call you back
Or pull your ghost off a beaten track
Just knowing you're breathing is enough for me
A single green nerve in a digital sea.

[Bridge]
And Lord, I don't need an answer, I don't need a sign
Just this quiet connection on a humming glass line.
A new kind of prayer I didn't know how to make,
For the simple, stunning goodness of your own damn sake.

[Outro]
A single green nerve...
In a digital sea...
