New Wood

[Verse 1]
Hey, uh... it's me. Sorry to call this late.
The spider lily on your counter's throwing a new leaf.
It's, what, Tuesday? Almost ten. The air's gone thick with slate.
Just... thinking 'bout the man I was. A stranger, in belief.

[Chorus]
And if you love this new wood, these new lines,
Is it a rescue? Or just being kind?
'Cause every plank of who I was got torn out by the tide.
Tell me which man you're loving when you sleep here by my side.

[Verse 2]
Remember the causeway, the Grand Am stalled out in the heat?
That kid who smelled of salt-air and rust, couldn't meet your gaze?
Momma said, "You got old eyes now," on her last good week.
I don't know his name anymore, through this humid haze.

[Chorus]
And if you love this new wood, these new lines,
Is it a rescue? Or just being kind?
'Cause every plank of who I was got torn out by the tide.
Tell me which man you're loving when you sleep here by my side.

[Bridge]
(Whispers underneath, rhythmic, layered: who is this? new skin... ghost wood... not him... water line... gone...)
You just see the grain in me, not the dry rot.
You water the damn thing you got.

[Outro]
Anyway. I'm rambling. I'll see you tomorrow.
(Sound of a call ending. Four seconds of silence.)

[Coda]
Just... wanted to say thanks. For the water.
