Influenced by Tracy Chapman, Joan Armatrading, Odetta, Rhiannon Giddens. Tracy Holloway was raised on the salt marshes of St. Helena Island, learning Gullah folk songs at her grandmother's knee. A scholarship took her to Berklee College of Music, but she dropped out after professors tried to train the 'provincial' South Carolina grit out of her voice. Now back home in Beaufort, she shucks oysters to pay off her student loans and writes songs about the people and places she was told to leave behind. Her music is the sound of returning home and realizing you never should have left.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You watch his thumb trace Anna’s spine
By the oyster roast, under the clothesline.
The last Saturday in June, the air is tackey,
Sticky with the things you can’t say back.

[Verse 2]
And there’s your Sarah, glass held high,
A mosquito zapper flash caught in her eye.
She turns and yells, “Ain’t da water fine?”
Her salt-rimmed smile, a tangled vine.

[Verse 3]
You swallow hard and don’t make a sound,
While this brackish knowledge spins you ‘round.
A truth like this, once it’s unbound,
Will poison all this good sweet ground.

[Bridge]
(Beat switches here. Synths pulse, strings swell.)
So what kind of friend are you gonna be now?
The steady hand that wrecks the prow?
You want to save this hour, somehow,
Before the levee breaks on her brow.

[Outro]
The embers cool on the half-shell pile.
You take her plate and force a smile.
