The Mason's Dust

[Verse 1]
The bucket of patching mix for the Formstone is on the porch.
We've been ignoring the hairline crack running north.
The old men on Fayette Street say it's a terrible sign
To fix the foundation on a house that's still yours and mine.

[Chorus]
And I am just trying to hold our home together.
You are looking at me like I'm trying to change the weather forever.

[Verse 2]
I bought the whole setup at the Canton hardware store last May.
You said, "It's just a wall, Donny," and then you turned away.
But your mother's people came from these same narrow halls,
They knew you don't seal a ghost inside of four living walls.

[Chorus]
And I am just trying to hold our home together.
You are looking at me like I'm trying to change the weather forever.

[Bridge]
I feel the damp grit of the compound under my fingernails.
Maybe this isn't a cure. Maybe this is how everything fails.

[Outro]
The mason's dust settles on the leaves of the ficus.
The mason's dust is all that's left of us.
