One Little Line

[Verse 1]
I’m leaving San Luis Obispo with a suitcase full of doubt,
Then USC’s bright red letters while my breakouts won’t clear out.
Fifteen hundred dollars later, still the mirror says, “Not yet,”
I’m the saddest guy on campus with a face I can’t forget.

[Chorus]
Jocelyn’s a freshman, and she smiles when I walk by,
I’ve got words lined up to tell her—but they all get shy.
I could cross the whole campus, take on anything in view,
But I can’t say “Hey, Jocelyn”—what am I supposed to do?

[Verse 2]
At the Indian buffet, I’m overwhelmed and start to cry,
I say, “I don’t like Indians,” then I can’t explain just why.
The naan goes cold beside me; I’m a mess beneath the lights,
While Jocelyn is laughing somewhere, making everything feel bright.

[Bridge]
Maybe I’m scared of strangers, maybe scared of being known,
Maybe all this leaving means I’m learning on my own.
Next time she walks past me, I’ll try one little line:
“Hey, Jocelyn—how’s your day?” and hope the words come out fine.

[Outro]
San Luis to USC, still a nervous, hopeful guy—
Fifteen hundred bucks, one “hey,” and one less reason to cry.
