Influenced by Tierra Whack, Missy Elliott, André 3000, Yo-Yo Ma. Swamp Phlox, born Delilah Vance, was supposed to be a botanist. Raised in Savannah on Gullah folktales and classical cello lessons, she was halfway through a biology degree at UGA when a breakup and a cracked copy of Ableton changed everything. Now, she dissects relationships with the same precision she once used on plant cells, her syrupy Southern drawl weaving through beats made from distorted cello and the chirps of Lowcountry cicadas. She still pays her rent working at a nursery, talking to a venus flytrap named Audrey III for inspiration.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I'm the three-dollar pewter hook you got from E. Shaver's,
Screwed next to the jamb, I'm the keeper of saviors
And the keeper of ghosts, felt the heft of his Lexus key,
Felt the cold condensation from a July sweet tea.
On the wall by the light switch, I'm a permanent fixture,
Watched him trace the wood grain, paint a permanent picture
Of leaving. Tuesday morning, 8 AM, the humidity broke,
Heard the deadbolt click final, and that was the last word he spoke.

[Chorus]
Holdin' the weight, just a memory's ghost now,
Got this tender fury, from the coast to the coast town.
Still feel the vibration, the jingle, the lie,
Yeah I'm holdin' the weight, watchin' new habits multiply.

[Verse 2]
Six months of just silence, then the scrape of your solo key,
Saw you check your reflection in my metallic body.
Saw the new venus flytrap you bought for the sill,
Saw the take-out containers stack up, saw you payin' your bills
In a stack on the table where the catalogues festered.
He texted "u up?" last October, you left it unanswered.
Now your keychain is heavier, got a new brass address,
And a little wood turtle, puttin' my strength to the test.

[Chorus]
Holdin' the weight, just a memory's ghost now,
Got this tender fury, from the coast to the coast town.
Still feel the vibration, the jingle, the lie,
Yeah I'm holdin' the weight, watchin' new habits multiply.

[Bridge]
(BEAT SWITCH)
New season, new pollen count, new rhythm in the floor.
He said "I'll be back for this," left the spare Toyota one by the door.
But the lock's been recoded, the pluff mud's been swept,
And I'm holding your triumph, for all the promises kept to yourself.

[Outro]
Yeah, I'm just a hook on the wall.
Watch you grab the new keys, standin' up straight and tall.
