Influenced by The National, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The War on Drugs. Born Gwidon Opłatek to Polish factory workers in Hamtramck, Michigan, Gideon Toll was supposed to be an architect. He dropped out of college and instead began drafting musical blueprints of the Rust Belt's decay, his lyrics full of the structural language he never forgot. Now based in Chicago, his songs, built on a rumbling baritone guitar, are cinematic elegies for an industrial America, written by a man who still keeps his father's steel lunchbox on his desk.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The Kowalski's Market sign blinked out at ten past three,
Third night of the blackout, August '03.
The whole damn grid felt like a busted lung,
a blueprint for a city that had come unsung.
You unfolded a napkin from the glovebox light,
smiling like you'd just invented the night.

[Chorus]
You drew it on the napkin with a borrowed pen,
"The fire escape schematic, baby, let's get in."
Load-bearing memory, stress-test in the dark,
just a couple kids trying to leave a mark.

[Verse 2]
That fence felt cold for August, smelled of rust and coming rain.
We tested every cross-brace, measured every strain.
You whispered, "It's a straight-shot to the mezzanine,"
and for a second, I knew exactly what you mean.
Your laugh was like a hairline crack across the quiet,
a beautiful new weakness I was ready to try.

[Chorus]
You drew it on the napkin with a borrowed pen,
"The fire escape schematic, baby, let's get in."
Load-bearing memory, stress-test in the dark,
just a couple kids trying to leave a mark.

[Bridge]
Bolt-cutter. Chain-link. Your hand. My hand.
One count. Two count. The plan. The plan.

[Outro]
We never built a thing that lasted, you and I,
just a perfect set of plans for how to fall from a great height.
