Influenced by Future, Young Thug, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass. Kai Alston, known as Gilded Algae, was supposed to be a classical cellist. After a spectacular flameout at the Savannah College of Art and Design left him with crippling debt and a deep-seated imposter syndrome, he started making trap music in his small apartment, sampling the very instrument that represented his failure. His songs are the sound of his hometown, Savannah: gothic, humid, and beautiful on the surface but with a deep-seated decay underneath. He still works as a valet, parking cars for the rich tourists who have no idea the man parking their Bentley just dropped a track that sounds like Future composing a funeral march in a haunted mansion.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The ninety-one DeVille in bay four breathes a final shudder,
Polished chrome on bone-white paint, a ghost under a rubber cover.
He’s out here every Tuesday past the last call from the Congress Street bars,
wipin' down the patina, tryna buff away the structural scars.
Got a chamois cloth in one hand and a lifetime in the other,
the condensation on the concrete smells like summer and my mother
sayin' 'boy, you make it pretty, don't you never let 'em see the rot.'
He’s drawin' circles on the hood, connecting dots I plumb forgot.

[Pre-Chorus]
And the whole damn parking structure holds its breath,
the fluorescent lights all hum a note of death.
He just keeps on polishing that one... single... spot...
Like it's the only thing of value that he's got.

[Chorus]
That's a foundation garment for a house that's caving in,
and I wanna scream about the beautiful state it's in.
That's a load-bearing silence, it's a gilded, perfect lie,
and I love the way it looks right as it's about to die.

[Verse 2]
I see my father in his posture, see the architecture of his doubt,
the blueprints for a life he mapped but never got to buildin' out.
Remember sittin' shotgun, drivin' down the old Isle of Hope road?
He told me, "Son, the weight you carry ain't the heaviest you'll tow."
This man is living in that future, in the quiet after-act,
where all the warranties are voided and the promises have cracked.
He's treating steel and glass and lacquer like a body he can save,
a perfect, empty mausoleum he will drive into his grave.

[Pre-Chorus]
And the bay door rattles, swallowing the wind,
a low country sermon on original sin.
He just keeps on polishing that one... final... spot...
Pretending that the engine isn't shot.

[Chorus]
That's a foundation garment for a house that's caving in,
and I wanna scream about the beautiful state it's in.
That's a load-bearing silence, it's a gilded, perfect lie,
and I love the way it looks right as it's about to die.

[Bridge]
Does the rust beneath the surface ever whisper back at you?
Does the quiet in the cabin tell you something awful's true?
Is the upkeep just a ritual to keep the dread at bay?
I see the keys are in the car, sir. Have a blessed day.

[Outro]
Yeah, a gilded, perfect lie.
He just drives into the night.
