Influenced by Bruce Springsteen, The War on Drugs, The 1975, Peter Gabriel. Rory Zima’s parents fled Sarajevo in the 90s and settled in Paterson, NJ, never speaking of the war they escaped. He found his own language in their unspoken history, saving up from a dishwashing job to buy a vintage Juno-106 synthesizer. Now 29 and living in a converted Jersey City garage, his anthemic, synth-soaked rock songs are dispatches from the NJ Turnpike, trying to outrun a past that isn't even his.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The Burger King sign on Route 17 is buzzing out in the sleet.
Last night I dreamed in Bosnian again, a language I don't speak.
The kitchen air smells like burek and bleach, a ghost in the wiring I can't reach.
I watch the second hand of the clock go 'round, without a single sound.

[Chorus]
Did you strip this whole life down for parts? (Down for parts)
Just to give me your secondhand heart? (Secondhand heart)
This engine in my chest just knocks and screams.
Tell me these were your American dreams.

[Verse 2]
I delivered groceries up on the Palisades to a house that smelled like money and rain.
They had a picture of Sarajevo from '84, frozen in a silver frame.
You never showed me pictures from before the war, you said "Why would you ask me for that?"
I saw my face in their window, November-cold, a story I can't get back.

[Chorus]
Did you strip this whole life down for parts? (Down for parts)
Just to give me your secondhand heart? (Secondhand heart)
This engine in my chest just knocks and screams.
Tell me these were your American dreams.

[Bridge]
My knuckles are raw from a fight I didn't start.
This silence is tearing my whole world apart.
This silence is a rust I can feel in my blood.
Was it ever enough?

[Chorus]
Did you strip this whole life down for parts? (Down for parts)
Just to give me your secondhand heart? (Secondhand heart)
This engine in my chest just knocks and screams.
Tell me these were your American dreams.

[Outro]
Just the hiss of the Turnpike rain.
And the 4:17 AM train.
